SC449 PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING (POE)
Course: SC452 Principles of Engineering (POE) TC
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Subject Area: Technology/Engineering
Type: Standard, Potential College Credit
Credits: 1
Prerequisites: Geometry
This is a year long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. Principles of Engineering (POE) is a yearlong Project Lead The Way course designed for 10th, 11th or 12th grade students. This survey course exposes students to major concepts they will encounter in a post-secondary engineering course of study. This course will fulfill the physical science credit for graduation. Students will utilize engineering tools such as 3D modeling software, hands-on prototyping equipment, programming software, and robotics hardware to bring their solutions to life. Students apply the engineering design process to solve real-world problems across a breadth of engineering fields such as mechanical, robotics, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and product design and development. Students are able to obtain college credit based on their performance on the optional end of year assessment.
Outcomes:
Design, create, test, and evaluate a compound machine design
Calculate the internal and external forces acting on a system based on statics
Relate knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic power components to the manipulation of work and power
Utilize the design process to design a functioning system
Apply terminology associated with 3D drafting and design part creation and assembly
Utilize math and science skills and practices in assignments geared toward a design application
Design, build, and program robotics using Vex V5 robotics
Organize and document learning process by creating and keeping an engineering notebook
Notes: This course can fulfill either the CTE requirement or the Physical Science Credit.
