The Elkhorn Area School District (EASD) and Delavan-Darien School District (DDSD) are proud to announce the launch of the Craftsman with Character® (CWC) Program. This semester-long initiative connects students with skilled trades and emphasizes character development. This collaborative program will begin on January 22, 2025, offering students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop the foundational values needed for success in their careers and lives.
Career & College Academy has three students participating in the program: Abel Chavez, Colten Welch, and Griffin Brieschke. Delavan-Darien Technical School is represented by Cesar Medrano, Josh Hersrud, and Rafael Perez. These students will spend four days each week working directly with six local companies—Propshaft, R & L Springs, Wisconsin Oven, Integra, Continental Plastic Corporation, and Royal Basket Trucks, Inc. One day a week, they will engage in classroom-based learning focused on character development, led by Jon Anzalone, EASD Community Engagement Coordinator, and Lisa Pavett, WCEDA Program Manager - Inspire & Made in America Walworth County.
This program results from a partnership coordinated by Chris Trottier, EASD Director of Strategic Partnerships, and Mike Rick, DD Tech Administrator & CTE Coordinator. It represents a shared commitment to creating opportunities that enhance the educational experience, bridge school-to-work programs, and support youth apprenticeships while instilling character.
Craftsman with Character® is a workforce development program founded in 2013 by Dave Hataj of Edgerton Gear. The program offers a structured model and curriculum that brings together schools and local businesses to provide meaningful job shadowing, character education, and mentorship. Speaking about the program, Dave Hataj remarked, “In choosing ‘craftsman,’ we honor the tradition of excellence while embracing the diversity of talents and voices that contribute to the world of craftsmanship. We believe that anyone who embodies these values and skills is, indeed, a craftsman.”
This partnership between EASD and DDSD highlights the dedication of both districts to preparing students for fulfilling careers in the skilled trades. By combining real-world experiences with values-based learning, the Craftsman with Character® Program empowers students to build a foundation for success while strengthening ties between education and industry. The districts are grateful to the local businesses and mentors who are making this transformative experience possible. Together, they are helping shape the future of these students and their communities.
