Our students participated in bus evacuation drills when they arrived at Darien this morning. Thank you to Dousman for your assistance. The students did a great job!
Third grade dual language students celebrated Cinco de Mayo with some dances they practiced during recesses recently. Thank you Mrs. Barquero for assisting the students and providing virtual viewing for all of our students.
4th graders collaborated to identify the structures and features of fossils in order to determine where the fossil lived. Science rocks!
Third grade students are working on drawings for an earth day contest hosted by the Geneva Lake Conservancy. Students were sent an Earth Day poem and asked to draw a picture of how the poem made them feel or inspired them. Winning drawings may be published in local newspapers.
Games are a great way to reinforce math concepts. Third graders spent some time on Friday reviewing multiplication, counting on forward and backwards, and addition/subtraction practice with games. When possible, spend time with youro child playing games at home too.
The Best Communities for Music Education Award is a signature program of The NAMM Foundation that recognizes and celebrates school districts and schools for their support and commitment to music education and efforts to assure access to music for all students as part of a well-rounded education. This year, the program celebrates its 22nd year of honoring schools and districts across the country.
The Delavan-Darien School District community was selected based on an application submitted by Orchestra Teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Bayerl, which provided information about funding, staffing, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. Data was analyzed statistically and verified via a follow-up audit by researchers at The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. The Delavan-Darien School District has received this award every year since 2014!
We would like to thank all of our music educators and the community for supporting our musical education in the district.
April showers bring...Lucky Ducks! All students and staff received a duck of their choice. They are to name it and write about it, and they may win random prizes if their duck’s number is called. Good luck to all!
Darien students enjoyed a virtual 'field trip' to UW Whitewater Young Auditorium to enjoy the Dogman muscial. Many students have been reading the Dogman books both at school and at home.
Darien students have been working on the sample state Forward Exam questions. Here they were discussing a question from the Science practice test. They have been learning test taking strategies as well.
Fourth graders have been working diligently on their final drafts for writing. Then they had a chance to celebrate their published work with others at a camping themed publishing party. The students enjoyed reading their narratives to their classmates.
Third graders have been reading and learning about fables. Here are some students helping one another read and comprehend the fable they were working on.
Recently students took a story from the ELA Benchmark reading program and created a reader's theater performance. He is a short clip of them in action. The story was called Gansos para la reina (Geese for the Queen). The students learned a positive message from the story, practiced dipthongs, worked as team and practiced their Spanish!

Mrs. Pickel, principal at Darien Elementary School is meeting with each student to set a goal for improving their math and reading scores on the upcoming MAP tests. Students should be reading each night for 20-30 minutes and spending time in Dreambox (by themselves) to practice math concepts.
MAP tests will begin next Monday. Students should get a good nights rest and eat a healthy breakfast on the day of their test. They will do a math test one day and a reading test another day.
From all of the staff at Darien Elementary School to all of you, "Hve a safe , healthy, and happy holidays!" We will see you when school resumes on January 4, 2021!
